These are all challenges issued on the MBfic mailing list - LATEST FIRST. I hope they will inspire any writers to take up a challenge and share the result with us. |

OKay, I thought I'd issue a quick challenge and see what you can come up with. Write a story...any length....drabble, dribble, novella or novel....or a poem about what any MB character would make as a New Year's Resolution. It should contain the words:
"Why didn't I keep last years resolution!" |

I'm not even asking for a fic - but just a scene. There's just a few rules for this one.
(Originally) You've got till August 31.
For EVERYONE: All fic posts and public feedback MUST have "QUICKIE" in the subject line. (Read on: you'll see why.)
For WRITERS: You cannot read any posts with "QUICKIE" in the subject line until after you've posted your scene (so the sooner the better). Write a scene in any AU that answers this:
How do you think Buck and Chris first met?
Consider the following. Include it in your scene or leave it out, as you choose, but DO use dialogue and, if applicable, action.
What were the circumstances? Why were they there? (Think of places you've met people, or where your favorite movie and TV characters have met.)
Was anyone else there?
What was that first meeting like? Good? Bad?
How old were they?
What were their impressions of each other? (They don't have to be mutual.)
What, if anything, did they have in common?
How did that first meeting turn out? |

Then let's make it one! A Holiday Traditions challenge!
1. Take a tradition you have or have participated in around this time of year.
2. Strip out what really happened and who was there.
3. Now...Put an MB character - ANY MB character - in a similar tradition.
(Think: Why is he there? Is there anyone with him? What does he want? What does he do about it?) |

Yes... it's that time of the year for sitting around campfires telling stories of witches, demons, ghosts or things that go BUMP in the night.
I challenge EVERYONE to take their favorite halloween-style story and add an MB character(s). They can be IN the story or even telling the story.... It can be a nice story, a scary story or something gruesome...
...BUT all to be posted on 31st October/1st November -- rated accordingly for those faint of heart :-) .... You haven't got long so let's begin... Once upon a time.... |

Issued by KATHY B and inspired by Angela
A fic or drabble about an MB character and... Procrastination. |
|
| 27 July 2003 |
Issued by SANDRA (Tarlan) for WINNIE: Blackout
How about a story in ANY genre (gen, smut, slash) for any MB character concerning a BLACKOUT.
What does happen when the lights go out? Where is our MB character at the time -- and who is he with -- or is he all alone in the dark? |
|
| 27 July 2003 |
Issued by WINNIE: Birthday Fic
Okay, as fans of the most gorgeous blond to ever grace the screens, not to mention those wonderful assets of his, we all know his birthday is July 31. Why don't we have a celebration challenge? Okay, here's what I'm proposing...
Write a birthday fic for any MB character (gen, het, or slash). Pick one specific year (That is he turned 30 or 40 or whatever) and tell us what he did, how he celebrated and who he was with. Did he get drunk or did he stay sober and spend it alone? What was he thinking about at the time. Come on folks, this is our favorite topic and we all want more MB fics |
|
| 01 July 2003 |
Issued by KATHY B. and WINNIE: JULY DRABBLE
Winnie and I came up with this one...
Write - and post - a 100-word drabble about an MB character to be entered in a drawing for one of three 8x10 MB pics (randomly selected from my personal stash). Rules are simple:
1. Must be a minimum of 100 words. More is fine if you're feeling inspired and want to continue.
2. Must be posted on list by Tuesday, July 15.
3. Any MB character, any genre, any rating (and DO use ratings!)
4. One entry per drabble. (So post lots!)
Now...If you're looking for a way to jump-start your creativity, here's a list of 14 opening lines. Feel free to use any of them, or just use them to get your imagination sparked.
The man glanced over his shoulder and darted down the alley.
The wind whipped through the trees, bending them nearly double.
It was there on the table.
The man leaned forward, lowering his voice to a whisper.
The street was crowded and noisy.
No one was supposed to know.
It cost more than he could afford.
The man pulled his coat collar closer around his ears.
Something didn't feel right.
Fish darted along the bottom of the pond.
The prisoner pulled futily at his handcuffs.
The crowd jumped to their feet and cheered.
He studied the painting.
It was the kind of promise friends make to each other.
Good luck! |

Issued by KATHY B:
A BEFORE THEY WERE challenge!
A fic or scene showing who they were before we first see them in the movie/show.
Before Judson was a reknowned explorer.
Before Chris was fast.
Before Hicks was a Colonial Marine.
Before Reese volunteered to travel back in time.
Before Curran was a SEAL. (He had to at LEAST be a sailor first.)
Before Smokey hit bottom.
Before Henry Gates has the watch.
Before...?
What was he like then? How did he react to situations? How different is he from when *we* meet him?
How many can we get posted by June 30? (Maybe even in time for MB's book, if you want to include it!) |

Issued by WINNIE: (from Chris Larabee fanfic page)
CHALLENGE #1: LARABEE LASHINGS It has come to our attention that there are lots of us out there who love all things Larabee. And while there are a number of good "Chris" stories out there, our dark-clad leader is generally used as a supporting character - picking up the pieces when one or more of our other darling Seven are beaten and down-trodden. Well, it's time for Chris to be "taken care of" for a change, and we all know what that means - more Larabee Lashings. Several fans are now calling for more abuse to our fearless leader! I believe our site Webmistress called it "bashing." But have you ever looked "lashing" up in Rodale's Synonym Finder? Let's see, there is whipping, flailing, smacking, hitting, whomping, thwacking, flogging, poking, sticking, agitating, cuffing and one of my personal favorites - jumping all over!
The Magnificent Seven has some of the best fan fiction authors I have ever seen. Let's see how creative you can all be when it comes to testing our courageous hero! Let's face it, Chris has a past that is made for torture - and he has six strapping "brothers" to help him out. |

Issued by SANDRA:
I was chatting with Kathy and we both came up with a wonderful idea... transposing characters in MB films...
What if, instead of HICKS in Aliens, that marine had been BO LANDRY (from A Taste of Killing)?
What is, instead of LARABEE, it had been RINGO in Magnificent Seven
What if, instead of REESE, it had been ROBERT BLY (art of war) in Terminator...
What if it had been HENRY GATES (Clockstoppers) instead of GARNET in In A Shallow Grave.
How would the different personality have influenced the outcome of the film? Anyone want to ponder over it and have a go at writing a film/show (or a scene from a film/show) with a different MB character in the MB role? <vbeg> |

Any excuse to get someone writing, especially if it's for the first time! So here's a challenge:
Take a favorite quote from one MB character and give it to another in a fic. Doesn't have to be a famous line - just one YOU like and remember.
What if, for example, Kyle Reese had said to Sarah, "Lady, I am the bad element?" Or if Bill (Susan's Plan) spoke Ringo's Latin dialogue from Tombstone? |

List #1

a revolver
a kitten
roller coaster
ferris wheel
List #2
merry
a sheriff
a picture
tuna fish

Hey Gals this is your favorite lurker coming out to see what you all are thinking. Anyway The other day I was watching Risky Business yes I know its not a MB movie shame on me. LOL anyway I got to talking to Kathy. Well we were talking over the one scene the one where Tom is lip-syncing to Old Time Rock 'N Roll by Bob Seger. Well my mind started churning out thoughts. What would happen if Chris or Capt Anderson or even Casey was caught doing just that, by their friends or girlfriends. Well and this challenge popped up. So get out those typing fingers and paper. The Challenge is this. Write a snippet a fic whichever you want of our main Man MB doing just that, but then he gets caught doing it. Either by a girlfriend friends or whatever.... see what you can come up with. I know you gals can do it. Any movie or AU you want to use it in. Lets see what those purty minds of yours can come up with.

It's next week! Here's a couple of warm-ups to try to get your creativity jump-started:
1. Write a love letter from an MB character to another character (not an MB one) from an MB movie/TV-show. The characters do not have to be from the same show/movie.
2. Write a love letter TO an MB character from another character (not an MB one).
Now for the fic idea:
"A Valentine's Day in the Life of... (MB character)"
Could be funny or serious, based on a true story or totally fictional. |

Okay, in my Great Clutter Cleanup, I've come across in enormous collection of buttons gathered from all kinds of eclectic boutiques over time. The following is a list of most of them and here's the challenge:
Use at least one in a fic about an MB character. They can appear in dialogue, on a t-shirt, bumper sticker, book cover or movie title, as the theme/premise of the story - any way you can think of. Here they are!
Don't you dare hug me.
No thanks. I prefer someone who lives above ground.
Men: you can't live with them and you can't shoot them.
Suppose I said yes.
Enjoy Life. This is not a dress rehearsal.
How can you resist such cuteness and talent?
I have no intention of telling you my real name.
No autographs please.
Where's Basil? Where's my Rolls?
Mind like a steel Slinky.
Maybe later. Maybe never.
I am eruditer than you.
Life is a constant audition.
Reality is for people who lack imagination.
No, I'm not Joan Collins.
Looking for Mr. "He'll Do"
Not much upstairs - but what a staircase!
The void cannot be filled by liquor or aerobics.
When the going gets weird...
Yes, I am famous.
Moody, but cute.
I'm goin' crazy. Wanna come along?
Love means never having to say 'Put down that meat cleaver!'
If I can't win, I don't want to play.
All you need is love...good looks, thin thighs, and lots of money.
Accepting reality is the first step to insanity.
If you're looking for me, I just left.
On the journey to Enlightenment, I'm taking the local.
This is the earliest I've ever been late.

Ooo! Challenge! How about a ficlet about an MB character telling a joke? Or one with a practical joke? |
|
| 05 Jan 2003 |
Issued by KATHY B:
Let's see...We tried the infamous Flowbee, and we did discuss Chia pets, though that probably doesn't lend itself to a plot. Well, it's post-Christmas, and I can think of at least 3 things many of us do after Christmas. So how's these for a challenge?
Chris, Judson, or any other MB character and...
...taking down the Christmas tree and/or outside lights (I see hurtin' possibilities there)
...starting a new workout (sigh 'Nuff said)
...returning or ditching unwanted gifts (what kind of gifts could an MB character receive that he REALLY wouldn't want?)
Or how about a contemporary MB character taking up a winter sport?
...skiing (downhill or cross-country)?
...snowboarding?
...snowmobiling (my 6th-grade teacher got stranded once when his broke down in northern Alaska! ) ?
...ice fishing?
...snowshoeing?
Hmm...Some brainstorming words to get you thinking: avalanches, snowed-in, lost, cabins, ski patrols, snow caves, ice, climbing, camping, hunting, traps, animals, travel... |

Issued by KATHY B:
Okay, this is discussion or a challenge, depending on how inspired you're feeling. :-)
So...what kinds of new year's resolutions do you think MB's characters would make? That includes ol' buddy Judson!
Anyone want to write a fic-let about an MB character and new year's resolutions? (Making, keeping, breaking, not making, trying to keep--like all those people who crowd the gym in January and February only to disappear by April...) |

Issued by KATHY B:
Okay, time for some post-Christmas challenges. How about...ANY MB character and a seen-on-TV item, such as...
a chia pet (or other Joseph Enterprises product)
http://www.jeiusa.com/cgi-bin/webc.exe/Chiapet.html
a clapper
http://www.chia.com
a flowbee
http://www.flowbee.com
a pocket fisherman (or other Ronco product)
http://shop.ronco.com
OR...
Try writing a post-Christmas fic involving an MB character and a gift you received (this year or any other year) that you didn't like. How does he react to it? What does he do with it? Does he try to use it? Does he try to return it?

Okay, Kathy and I were talking about MB (I know, so what else is new, hehehe) Well the guy is gorgeous and versatile so I wanted to issue a challenge and with Kathy's help (Actually most of it was her idea) we came up with this....Winnie
Angel Challenge
Take one of MB's most tortured soul or notorious villain and turn him around. To do this make him an Angel (No not like Buffy's Angel) and have him need to help a poor tortured soul as his penance...IN other words take say Coffey and make him an Angel. His mission, if he wants to make amends for his crimes is to go back to earth and help someone turn their life around...Now it doesn't have to be Coffey it can be any of the other characters we would like to see redeemed. ...Imagine Johnny Ringo trying to do a good deed... |

Anyone can post challenges, so here's mine. These should be short, and could be just a scene.
1. A Christmas fic (SHORT!) about any MB character and the days just after Christmas: returns, sales, taking down decorations, belated gifts/cards from people you didn't expect, etc.
2. A New Year's fic: a New Year's Eve party or date, good or bad.
3: A New Year's fic: any MB character and a New Year's Resolution. (Somehow I can't imagine any MB character resolving to lose weight, though.) |

Issued by SANDRA:
I started a series last year in Magnificent 7 called 'Best of Times, Worst of Times'.
How about a variation on that theme but for ANY MB character?
All you wonderful people out there... and I mean ALL of you <g>... pick a favourite character and either TELL US or WRITE A STORY depicting what you believe could be that character's BEST and/or WORST Christmas.
Doesn't have to be long... even just a few sentences if you'd like.... though no one will kick you if you did write us a long story <vbg>
Don't be shy in posting a 'TELL US' response if you are not comfortable with writing the story. You never know, one of the many talented writers on the list might decide to turn that into a story for you -- broad hint to the writers :-)
Equally, don't be afraid to have a go at writing the story yourself. It can be a lot of fun sharing with other people who appreciate MB in all his many guises :-) Remember... anything goes on this list... GEN, HET, SLASH.. as long as an MB character has a major role to play in the story :-) |

| 14 Nov 2002 |
Issued by KATHY B:
1. An MB character and a Thanksgiving dinner. Challenge part: no more than him + 2 other main characters. Main characters includes any original characters and the scene/story/poem does NOT have to be the dinner itself.
2. An MB character and a scarecrow. (Bonus: can you do one with Kyle Reese or Dwayne Hicks?)
3. A journal entry about one day in the life of an MB character. (Bonus: try a character besides Chris.) Let us in on what he's thinking and feeling. Could be an ordinary day, a dramatic day, or a day from the movie/show. |
|
| 18 Nov 2002 |
Issued by KATHY B:
With those November challenges and Thanksgiving looming large, here's a suggestion to hopefully shake up writer's block... A fic about any of MB's characters that includes:
- a turkey (live, dead, or just mentioned),
- a broken clock or watch,
- gratitude (it IS Thanksgiving, after all), and
- a sudden storm (any type: rain, snow, dust, wind, or hail) |

Issued by WINNIE:
Okay, guys here's a little scene I wrote a while back and I would love to see some different takes on this....
So, the questions I'd like you to answer in your fic are
What happened and why doesn't Chris want the others to know what caused the injury, oh and what is the nature of the injury. Who is the girl? why is Chris pissed off and what did they do to him at the hospital that makes him want to leave......Winnie
"Shit, Cowboy, ya look like hell."
"You're next, Tanner!" Larabee hissed. "Just get me the hell outta here before they decide to do something else.
"Sure, Chris," Wilmington helped the blond stand, biting back a laugh at the collar wrapped around Larabee's neck.
"You gonna tell us what happened?" Tanner asked.
"No!"
"Come on, Chris," Tanner begged as they walked out of the room.
"Mr. Larabee, I'm so sorry you were hurt."
Buck and Vin stared at the beautiful red head standing before them.
"It's okay," Larabee told her, trying to escape before his two friends demanded an explanation.

But can you DO it?
How about...
an MB ficlet under 500 words about an MB character and a body of water?
Or maybe...
an MB ficlet under 400 words about an MB character and a painting?
Or perchance...
an MB ficlet under 300 words about an MB character and a dog?
Or perhaps...
an MB ficlet under 200 words about an MB character and rain?
Or possibly...
an MB ficlet under 100 words about an MB character and a note?
Any takers? C'mon! Let's see some new writers out there! Doesn't have to be a whole story - a scene will do. Feel free to mix, match, go over the word count if you need to, or even as a springboard to a larger fic! Doesn't have to be CHRIS, either! Give it some thought, write it up, and then POST it, right here! :-)
Winnie's ACHING to read some new writers! So's Angela! So am I! Anybody out there? |

Blame Winnie. :-)
1. An MB character and working out. (I'm sorry but even if you're the lurkiest lurker in all the internet, don't tell me you haven't thought of THAT!)
2. An MB character and an elevator.
Blame Winnie.
And still #3,
3. an MB character and a birthday.
Still blamin' Winnie. ;-) |

Issued by KATHY B:
How about a fic - using any MB character, even Judson Cross - about a birthday? Could be his birthday, someone else's, celebrating a birthday, a birthday gift - anything related to a birthday and any MB character.
If you've never written a fic before, give it a try! It doesn't have to be long. It doesn't even have to be a whole fic; maybe you've got a scene in mind. So share already! |

Hey, writers and non writers...This challenge was posted to another list and the lady gave me permission to post it here as well...She wrote this little scene and would like to see it expanded on....I think it's intriguing and might just have a go at it as well....I'd love to see others take it up also.....The challenge and scene is below and must be included somewhere in the story and it's Old west...Winnie
Version 1.
Chris Larabee lay face down in the hot New Mexico sand. His black shirt was shiny wet and he lay absolutely still. Kneeling beside him was Vin Tanner looking in horror at his blood covered hands. Voices drifted past him unnoticed.
"Is he dead?"
"If he ain't he will be soon. You want I should kill the tracker too?"
"Nay, he ain't been right in the head the whole time I been watching them. They'll both be dead before anyone finds them."
Version 2.
Chris Larabee lay face down in the hot New Mexico sand. His shirt was shiny wet and he lay absolutely still. Kneeling beside him was Vin Tanner looking in horror at his blood covered hands, tears running down his face. Voices drifted past him unnoticed.
"Is he dead?"
"If he ain't he will be. You want I should kill the kid too?"
"Nah, he ain't going no where by himself, he's too little. They'll both be dead before anyone finds them."
